Reflecting on the 2025 Fall Season
December 11, 2025

This fall was a season of exploration at 1014 as we focused on cultivating vibrant trans-Atlantic exchange across a variety of new topics and formats. Over the course of 21 events, from film screenings and panel discussions to food tastings and exhibitions, we welcomed our community into dynamic spaces and discussions.
We kicked off our programming with the official launch of our new Sports category. The inaugural event, Balancing the Game: The Fine Line of Sports Diplomacy, was a panel discussion that considered sports diplomacy as a developing field from political, economic, and cultural perspectives. We are excited to host more Sports events in the future, particularly in light of the upcoming Olympics and FIFA World Cup.
We also embraced the nuanced intersections between science, technology, ethics, and identity. During Artificial – Immortality through AI?, an intimate book talkback, renowned author and illustrator Amy Kurzweil reflected on how she documents her famous father Ray Kurzweil’s attempt to make the family’s past emotionally tangible again with the help of a chatbot, begging further inquiry around the role AI can play in memory and legacy at-large. The Bilingual Brain: Unlocking Nature’s Superpower was another lively conversation that emphasized how bilingualism is a neurological edge to be celebrated in educational, professional, and personal contexts. We also brought together journalists, scientists, experts from civil society and politics, AI developers, and startup founders to assess the role of journalism in highlighting the opportunities and risks in AI usage in Reporting the Machines– Journalism and the Ethics of AI.
Just like the turning hues of autumn leaves, people and places in society are subject to change. In Not Just Livable– Loveable: Urban Quality, Reality and the Shape of a Home, we gathered architects, planners, and urban designers from both sides of the Atlantic for a conversation about how we shape the places we live and how they shape us. In our ongoing Let's Talk Democracy series, we considered the stakes of cyber warfare and evolving understandings of "the rule of law" on the international stage. With an open salon style, an esteemed panel of experts also shared insights into the new realities of aging societies, the challenges of workplace ageism, and the cultural fascination with longevity.
Exploring the arts is especially effective in creating vibrant and accessible spaces for communal connection in immersive formats. With the screening of the newly released acclaimed German documentary Go Clara Go with the director present, we grappled with how art can push the boundaries of what may be said or seen within frameworks of political resistance. We continued our Anatomy of An Artwork series, inviting our community to step behind the canvas of one of Hwang Seontae’s Sunshine works. And lastly, we closed our season with Once Upon a Bite: Food, Folktales, and the Imagination, a fantastic fairytale feast paired with readings and discussions around how food carries memory across time and borders.
Thank you for joining us this fall. Wishing you a joyful holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you again in the new year.
